The Convenience of Building & Owning a Carport

Published / by Nick

Making a Safe, Secure & Dry Place for Your Cars

Today we will discuss with you the value and importance that building a carport brings to your home. They are much more affordable and cost-effective than building a garage and we will let you know why below. Learn about the benefits of building a carport from this specialised guide.

To begin with, leaving your vehicle parked outside exposed to the elements will only lead to the depreciation value of your car. When a car is parked in a garage or underneath a carport you offer it protection from all of the various elements. Things like rain, dust, hail, snow and other weather will not damage your vehicle when it is housed under a carport. Another great feature to a carport is that it makes your vehicle less visible which will help in deterring would-be thieves. There are a lot more reasons on why you should go ahead with building a carport and we shall continue on with more of the great benefits below.

For those on a budget, the advantage of installing a carport over a garage is big. One of the biggest advantages of building a carport is that it may only cost you a few hundred dollars to cover one car. When it comes to building a garage that protects only one vehicle you will be looking into thousands of dollars associated with costs, materials, contractors and other expenses.

Constructing a Carport is Fairly Easy Compared to a Garage. Image credit: Pinterest

Building a garage is a very large undertaking as it is a very big project. You will more than likely have to hire a contractor to complete the job for you. When you invite strangers into your home you do not know what you could be getting yourself into. Many garages naturally connect to high-traffic areas of your home which means you will have construction workers walking through your home as part of the building process. When you opt to use a carport instead you won’t need any builders to enter your home. Building a garage will naturally take a few weeks for contractors and builders to put everything together. Whereas when you choose to use a carport you typically will not need to hire anyone as you and a friend can easily complete the task in under a day or two.

Another problem that is often associated with building a garage is that you may have to appeal to governing bodies over home development to get your project permitted. Whenever you are going to do a major home improvement it is best to get the project approved ahead of time as to prevent any problems and hassles associated with paperwork and associated legalities in your municipality.

A benefit of choosing a carport is that they are much more aesthetically pleasing to look at then a garage. A garage tends to take up a lot of space and is large and imposing which ends up making your home look much smaller when you add it as an addition. However, a carport structure has a much more open feeling and is much smaller and takes up a lot less space and is typically visually more appealing to look at.

A carport also gives you more options then a garage will. You can host outdoor parties and put in picnic tables, a BBQ and chairs to hose family get-togethers and host parties for friends. You can both protect your guests from the hot sunlight or you can prevent them from getting wet during rainy days. A carport can be used for all sorts of things and you are only limited by your creativity and imagination. A carport does not have to be strictly just for storing vehicles.

You can even go as far as to decorate your carport. You can place seasonal plants along the edges so that they can grow up the support beams. You can also do other things like hang plants, flowers, and lights. There are virtually unlimited options you can choose from when it comes to decorating your carport and making it more comfortable. You can even add walls to it if you choose. Like we stated before you are only limited by your creativity and imagination.

Unlike a garage, most timber carports are portable. This means that you can bring it with you on camping trips or even if you move to another home. With a garage, it is in a permanent position and you don’t have the option of bringing it with you for added comfort and shelter from the elements. We hope this article has helped you in learning more about the benefits of carports. They may not be for everyone but for many homeowners, a carport is a preferable attachment to their home rather than a garage. The benefits of using a carport outweigh any negatives and they are portable and cost-effective for those on a budget.

How to spruce up a dated kitchen by spray painting the doors

Published / by Nick

Bring Your Kitchen Back to Life in Minutes!

Painting kitchen doors and drawers is a fairly simple DIY project that can give a whole new look to your kitchen. After some years you may have started to like your kitchen less. Be it because there are more modern kitchen styles around, or you would really love to have a new colour. Or maybe you are not happy with the defects that emerged over the years. Regardless of the reason, it is normal to yearn for a fresh look, especially in the kitchen, which is one of the rooms where you tend to spend most time in when at home. So, if you want to make a change, but not end up spending a lot of money, the best idea would be to spray paint your kitchen doors if they are made from timber. If they are MDF based formica based doors, then you can easily shop around from some beautiful made-to-measure replacement kitchen unit doors online.

To complete the transformation, you could also install new handles and knobs. Once you are done you will be amazed at the big difference!

Here is how to go about it. Remove the doors carefully, and label them so as to know where each one of them will go when you re-install them. You will also need to remove the knobs, handles and hardware. Carefully inspect each door one by one. There may be scratches that need to be filled up with putty, areas where there are stains, and any other defects that you could try to see to, or at least, hide when the spray paint is applied.

It is important to clean the doors well before you do any spray painting. This will also give you a better idea of their condition and of any measures you would need to take before moving on to the spray painting phase. Once you are done, it is best to sand them lightly and apply a good quality primer so as to ensure that the surface area is well prepared for the spray painting. This will be indispensable for better quality results later on.

When it comes to choosing the paint that you will be using, make sure that you choose a high quality, hard wearing paint which is suitable for your door material. You will also need to choose your preferred colour, so take the time to visit different paint stores so as to find just what you are looking for.

Tinting the primer to match the new colour of the paint, especially if it is a rather dark shade, is highly recommended. As soon as the base coat dries up well, it is also best to sand the doors again but lightly. After, you can move on to the painting phase. When spray painting it is best to wear a mask, and ensure that there is proper ventilation in the room. Once the first application is done, allow them to dry and apply a second coat so as to achieve a more even finish. Small areas may need to be painted by means of a small brush.

When the spray painting is complete, attach the handles and position each door to the right place on the cabinets so as to attach them and get the new kitchen look you had been planning for!

Choosing The Best Running Shoes For A Road Race

Published / by Nick

Road races, including marathons, require prior preparation in terms of fitness, your clothes, and your shoes. A road race may be the time for you to get a new pair of running shoes, no matter how much you are attached to your old pair.

Running shoes fall into different categories. These are:

Neutral cushioning shoes

This is a mid-weight shoe with more cushioning, and the weight varies with the model. Neutral cushioning shoes with a lower heel-to-toe drop (height between heel and toe) encourage a mid-foot strike, while the higher heeled ones provide better protection for heel strikers.

Minimalist footwear

It is a lightweight shoe that is made from flexible materials and little cushioning. It weighs 3-6 ounces per shoe and has up to 4mm heel-to-toe drop.

Stability and motion control shoes

These are shoes that are made with cushioning and the internal structure that corrects overpronation. This reduces the inward roll that can easily lead to injuries.

Racing flats

They are lightweight shoes weighing 4-9 ounces per shoe. Although they are referred to as ‘flats’, the heel-to-toe drop can range between 0-8mm. The flats are less supportive, but they promote faster speed.

So, which pair of running shoes should you pick? When looking for a new pair of shoes, you need to consider:

  • Your pronation levels
  • The fit of the shoe
  • Your weight
  • Your speed
  • Your level of preparation
  • The weather

This refers to the way your foot rolls when you run, and it is a part of the natural movement that helps your lower leg deal with the shock. Some people pronate less (underpronators) while others pronate more (overpronators). Pronation is not a bad thing, but it does affect the way you run and may increase the likelihood of injury if you use an unsuitable pair of shoes. It is, therefore, important to understand your pronation pattern for you to pick the right running shoes.

Your local running store should have a sales clerk who is able to look at your feet and evaluate your foot type. They should also ask questions regarding your training, injury history, running habits, and finally, watch you as you run. This will allow them to offer you options on the best running shoes for your individual needs and preferences.

  • Underpronators, also known as supinators need extra cushioning to avoid impact injuries.
  • Neutral pronators should look for stabilizing shoes, though they can wear a wide variety of shoes.
  • Overpronators should choose shoes that offer structured cushioning and support.

Your speed

How fast do you want to run? For some people, it is all about finishing the course, while others target a time. Your type of shoe should depend on your goals.

If you are an elite runner, you need shoes that will offer speed. This might be at the expense of comfort. A racing shoe for an entire marathon can really take its toll on you if you are not prepared.

Overweight Runners Need More Shoe Cushioning. Image credit: Shutterstock

Your weight

If you are heavier, you might need to look for extra cushioning in your running shoes. This will help reduce stress on your lower legs and give you more comfortable landings.

If you are a lighter runner, you can easily opt for less cushioning and go for lighter shoes. If you are a heavier runner, but you are used to running in lightweight shoes, then you will be fine because your body has adapted to the style.

The fit of the shoe

If you buy a very narrow shoe, you will be uncomfortable from the word go. Look for shoes that are wide, especially if you have a wide foot. The shoe will be comfortable and your foot will not rub against the side of the shoe. Brands like New Balance running shoes have variants on popular ranges that are wider to compensate for high impact runners.

Also, choose a shoe that is about half a size larger that your normal size to allow your toes some space, but not too much.

Your level of preparation

If all along you have been training in cushioned shoes, it is important that you run the race in cushioned shoes. Any last minute changes might result in injuries because your feet will not be prepared for it.

If you intend to run in a lightweight shoe, start using it early in your training and get in at least 100kms in it. This will tell you if your body is ready to handle the extra pressure.

A point to note; do not run in a new pair of shoes on the race day. You need to break in your new pair by alternating between it and your old pair during training.

What will the weather be like?

As your body generates heat, so do your feet. Choose a pair of shoes that has a breathable mesh in the upper to prevent your feet from getting sweaty and uncomfortable, which can lead to blisters and difficulty in running the race.

How to make built-in shelving with MDF boards

Published / by Nick

Create the ultimate space-saving shelving system in no time!

When you start to think of all the stuff you would like to store away on shelves, and yet you do not want to spend money on shelving, there is only one thing that remains an option – building shelving yourself. In reality, shelving can be built really easily as essentially it is only a frame with horizontal boards attached to serve as shelves. So, why do you end up spending several hundred pounds for something that you can easily build up on your own with some MDF boards and basic tools? It really won’t require any expertise or advanced woodworking skills or tools at all. There is no need to design anything complicated, as you can opt for the most basic of designs, where all of the shelves are of the same size. So, let us discuss in a little more detail how to make built-in shelving with MDF sheets cut to size.

Start off by measuring the space where the built-in shelving will be installed. Based on the space available, you can then decide on the layout of the shelving. Do you want the shelves to be exactly the same from top to bottom, or would you rather introduce a design where you make use of shelving dividers so as to alternate the shelves’ lengths as you move from one row to another? The decision will depend mainly on what you intend to place on the shelves, and their respective sizes. For instance, if they are going to be used as a built-in shelving system for books, you will need to take into account that some books are bigger than others. So some shelves may need to be of a bigger height than others. If on the other hand you will be placing DVDs, which are of the same height, you should opt for shelves that are of the same height all along. These considerations and decisions should be made in advance because otherwise you might end up wasting a great deal of space, and possibly not be satisfied with how much you managed to store on the shelves.

Once you have come to a decision, purchase and cut the MDF boards in the required dimensions. Once all the boards have been cut, it is best to sand them lightly because MDF tends to remain rough on the edges where the cutting was carried out. You may also wish to consider painting them. In that case the painting should be carried out at this point, before we move to the assembling phase.

Next, you will need to build the frame of your shelving unit. Set the base, and assemble the side to it. Do not just glue, but nail them up for more security. Make sure that they are flush. Next, attach the upper board so that the outer frame is all assembled. It is important that you allow the glue to dry well. Then the frame will then need to be attached to the wall, so make sure you take into account the materials you will need to fasten the frame securely to the wall. This is even more important if it is quite large.

Next you will need to build the shelves in their respective positions in the frame you just completed. As a general rule of thumb it is advisable to avoid having shelves longer than 40 inches as they can easily start sagging. You should also attach an anti-sag cleat at the rear part of the shelves. Cut the brackets and fasten them together with the bracket supports for more durability. As always, sand each piece with fine grit sandpaper. Fill all the nail holes with wood putty, and once it is dry sand lightly. Always apply enough to cover well, and remove the excess after a couple of minutes.

That is basically it. You will not be spending several hours to complete it and you won’t be spending a fortune either. Besides there is the fact that you will be feeling that sense of accomplishment once it is completed. Built-in shelving has always been a great way to make your home more organized, and at times you can never have enough when it comes to shelves, especially if you are a bookworm, or someone who never wants to throw anything away! Built-in shelves are also great for storing toys and stationery in kids’ bedrooms and play areas. They are also great for living areas, and in bedrooms to store away clothes that are off season, shoes and handbags. So, once you complete one built-in shelving system you are most probably going to build others for other rooms in no time! And with MDF boards it is very affordable indeed!

How to Observe Jupiter for Beginners

Published / by Nick

There are very good reasons why Jupiter is known as the “amateur astronomer’s planet”, chief among which are the facts that no two views of the planet are ever the same, and that the rich detail visible in its cloud tops can literally change before the observer’s eyes. Add to this the facts that Jupiter is visible for about 360 days out of every apparition that lasts 398 days, that it is very bright, and that its apparent angular diameter varies between 30, and 60 seconds of arc, and it should be obvious that the King of the planets is a spectacular sight even when using modest beginners skywatching equipment. If you want to see Jupiter like it appears in the image below, here is how to do it.

Finding Jupiter

Although Jupiter is a spectacular sight, bear in mind that it is very difficult to observe from the UK during September 2016. For instance, at the time of writing, September 3rd, Jupiter sets at 20:16 Local time as seen from London. By month’s end, Jupiter will set even earlier, at 18:39 Local Time, which will make it almost impossible to observe low on the western horizon. The planet will only become easier to spot around the middle of October 2016, at which time it will become an early morning (pre-dawn) object.

Nonetheless, despite the current difficulties in spotting Jupiter, it will dominate the pre-dawn sky for many months after it reappears, but getting up before dawn to view the planet is well worth the trouble, although there are some things to keep in mind to get the best views, such as:-

Bigger telescopes are better

Although Jupiter will consistently show some detail in small telescopes and even binoculars, it must be remembered that even though the planet is big and bright, it does not tolerate large magnifications very well.

For this reason, it is recommended that a telescope with a minimum of 8 inches of aperture be used to view Jupiter. Since a relatively large instrument gathers more light than smaller apertures, lower magnifications can be used to highlight details such as the equatorial and other belts, and even the Great Red Spot if seeing conditions allow.

As a general rule, magnifications of between 50× and 100× give the best results on 8-inch and larger instruments, but when it comes to observing the planets, atmospheric conditions are often more important than the aperture of a telescope. In some cases, and depending on the actual instrument used and local seeing conditions, you may require a slightly larger magnification, but again as a general rule, magnifications in excess of 200× or so tend to “soften” views of Jupiter, causing a marked loss of detail or sharpness in the view.

Filters are required for the best views

Note that the image below is for reference purposes only. It is highly unlikely that a view such as this will be seen through a small to medium telescope, but views approaching the one shown here might be possible with 14-inch and larger instruments, and then only in excellent seeing conditions. Also, note that by not using suitable filters, much of the colour variations and contrasts shown here will be lost to the observer.

Typically, the best results are obtained with filters that are of an opposite colour to the feature an observer wants to enhance. For instance, reddish brown belts and the Great Red Spot are best seen with a blue (Wratten #82A, #80A, and #38A) filters, while red (Wratten #21, #23, and #25) filters work best to accentuate blue features. Similarly, yellow (Wratten #12, and #8) filters work well to accentuate the Polar Regions, where there is less contrast than elsewhere on the planet. Note that this image of Jupiter is upside down, with South at the top, which is how many, if not most telescopes render images.

Some Galilean moons are always visible

Named after their discoverer, Galileo, who first observed them in the early 1600’s, Jupiter’s major moons Io, Ganymede, Europa and Callisto, are almost always visible, and the best part is that they are visible even in modest binoculars.

The image above shows the four Galilean moons through a 10-inch reflecting telescope, but from this image, it is not immediately clear which moon is which. There are many online resources available that tell an observer which moon is where, and at what time, but the major attraction of observing these pinpoints of light is to watch them as they weave their way around their parent planet.

Indeed, it is possible to watch their arrangement around Jupiter change from one hour to the next, and long observation shows them transiting the planet, or being occulted by the planet’s disc. A transit, which is when a moon moves across the planet’s disc, is the most fascinating of these events, because when the transit is tracked, the observer is reminded of the fact that nothing in the solar system, or indeed the Universe, is stationary. Everything revolves around something else, and by observing Jupiter and four of its many moons, this principle is demonstrated in the most vivid way possible.

Bird Surveys: Their Vital Part in Environmental Surveying

Published / by Nick

Safeguarding Britain’s Protected Species

Landscape architecture is an area that encompasses several fields. Apart from the creation of practical and sustainable design solutions, landscape architects also take care of the conservation of habitats or historical sites, along with sustainable drainage systems, landscape design and urban design. Landscape architects also carry out ecology surveys and assessments in a bid to make sure that protected species are safeguarded. They also carry out marine surveys and habitat surveys when necessary. These are considered to be indispensable practices before a proposal for development can be acted upon.

Another area of importance are bird surveys. In the UK birds along with their nests and eggs are protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Some bird species are offered more protection than others, simply because of their higher profile. There are a considerable number of species which are protected, and so before you can commence a development, you need to make sure that a professional landscape architect is consulted so that a bird survey is carried out at the site.

Tawny Owl. Image credit: Edinburgh Hawk Watch

Tawny Owl. Image credit: Edinburgh Hawk Watch

Some clients are not aware of this. However bird surveys are required for all of those development sites where there is a possibility that certain important species or assemblages are present. Such surveys are also a must in cases where a considerable level of disruption may occur, such as when it is likely that there will be a significant loss of bird nesting habitats. This applies even in cases when the particular species assemblage is not particularly significant. The aim is not to curtail development, but rather to make sure that any important species get protected. Apart from this one will also be better able to ensure that there will not be any detrimental effects on biodiversity.

The bird surveys that are carried out will vary according to the type of development that is being proposed for that site. Breeding bird surveys are among the most common ones. Such surveys are carried out after having carried out a number of site visits, generally even five visits. These are best carried out between the months of April and June so as to record as precisely as possible all the birds that are seen or heard at the site where the development is being proposed. This is in accordance to the Common Birds Census Technique. In other kinds of development it may be necessary to carry out more in-depth studies over a whole year.

Many clients worry about the fact that the presence of birds at the site where they wish to undertake some sort of development, might end up hindering that development. Their application for development may be rejected purely because of this reason, and when one is a developer most likely the birds in the area end up being the last thing on his mind, especially if the proposed development means a good investment or source of income. However, in reality the aim of bird surveys is to establish the likely impacts of the proposed development, so as to be better equipped with knowledge to establish the best course of action. For instance, the landscape architect will identify any issues which would need to be considered throughout the design, as well as suitable mitigation measures. Thus he will evidently need to work closely with the design team. Mitigation could include having a number of nest boxes within a proportion of the buildings on the site, or planting new hedges so as to provide additional room for nesting and foraging.

It is important for developers to realise how important it is to conduct bird surveys and allow them to shape decisions from then onwards. Development is a part of life however we need to be responsible enough in striking the right balance between nature and buildings. Bird surveys have the initial intention of helping us know how to strike that balance. We can always find practical solutions to make this a win-win situation. Thus, landscape architects should always inform clients of the various feasible courses of action and possible options, while encouraging them to be responsible in what they decide to do, for the benefit of all, including the innocent birds and other creatures on the site. By hiring a landscape architect to prepare accurate bird surveys that will help you in your decision making process you will be able to opt for a more reasonable finalisation of your development plans.

Choosing an affordable SEO Company

Understanding the best approach to finding a search marketing partner

Anyone who runs an online business knows of the importance of high levels of organic traffic. Paid channels such as PPC, banners, affiliate schemes and sponsorship can go a long way to building brand awareness but at the expense of your balance sheet. It’s expensive, notoriously difficult to get right and can spiral out of control if not kept on a constantly tight leash.

So even with multiple Google algorithmic updates over the course of the past few years, internet entrepreneurs are still seeking ways to achieve better natural ranks because essentially, they cost less and they work. The risks involved in SEO are still overshadowed by the cost outlay of going “traditional” and paying for every add, impression and click you put out on the web. Organic ranks if achieved are the promised land of every online business because once acquired, are in most cases, without associated fees.

So how do you go about selecting an appropriate SEO partner to help with your search marketing needs? It’s not like the market is short of options. Anyone who’s been involved with any form of website project, whether it be a blog, e-commerce business, corporate brochure, directory or social platform will know that there’s a lot of folks out there offering their self-proclaimed expertise. The sad fact is, these experts seldom prove to be the case and in fact, for the most part, are just opportunists reselling the work of a few mass link builders with a renamed, rebranded package. Nothing worse than getting the same junk as your competitors for your hard earned cash.

So the issue not not finding a SEO partner, it’s finding the right one and so with that in mind, you have to start to look more closer to home, rather than for the cheaper, more attractive overseas options.

The fact is, anyone who is willing to hire a so-called SEO guru from an overseas country, who they have no prior knowledge of, no professional relationship with and no idea of their true credentials, is effectively placing their internet business on the roulette table and waiting to see if the ball lands on red or black. It’s that clear cut.

It’s ludicrous to think that this practice still exists today but so many reckless business owners are willing to gamble they livelihoods and in many cases, the careers of they staff by hiring someone who could destroy their online presence if they’re not careful. Since 2012, Google has made a concerted effort to make the search experience of their users as high as possible. By doing so, they have made numerous algorithm updates to ensure the best quality, most relevant sites get ranked higher and with that, those sites that have signals and shares from multiple sources that are clearly bonafide, natural and authentic. Cheap overseas SEOs have never worked in that way and have for the most part, focused clearly on mass link building in a haphazard and unstructured way that can lead to any site, including some big name players, to get a massive slap round the face!

So when reverting to the original title of this article, it brings are entirely new meaning to what “affordable SEO” really means. If you still feel it’s simply down to the cost outlay then the whole point of this article has gone completely over your head.

Hopefully the penny has dropped and you’ve come to realise that finding an affordable SEO company means what you are willing to risk and what you can afford to lose in terms of your business, your search visibility and your longer term future. if you are still in the mindset that affordable SEO is still about cost, you are wrong. it’s about what will work, who will do the best job for you, who will lay out a clear and defined strategy and who will do it the correct way following Google’s updated Webmaster Guidelines.

If your mindset is on that path, you already know where to look and how to find the right partner. Look local, hire local and win local.

3 Common Misconceptions About Digital Marketing

Published / by Nick

Today, there are lots of people who are not fond of the term digital marketing, despite its obviousness. Simply put, the term digital marketing covers every single promotional or advertising effort done in the virtual world.

The importance of digital marketing nowadays is bigger than ever. While doing digital marketing was a privilege years back, now it’s a common need. Testing the challenging market and making everything to dominate it is one of the core principles of digital marketing.

As the world of digital marketing evolved, there have normally been many misconceptions about it. In fact, the plethora of opportunities with digital marketing is enormous. However, many people miss out the most basic things, which we will today share:

  • Higher Time Consumption Vs. Fewer Results
Many newbies in digital marketing are dissapointed by the time they spent with their efforts online and the results gotten from it. Whereas in the traditional marketplace advertising may go faster, the digital world seems as slower to people. This is a common misconception – although it may seem like digital marketing is a slower medium when processing the efforts is taken into consideration, the results of digital marketing stay for a long time – something that the traditional marketing is not proud of sharing.
  • It is too technical to track or measure
The complications that usually arise to people with tracking information are tied with not knowing the basic things. The common misbelief that the digital marketing is too technical is present to many things, however the digital world continuously makes easier and simpler products for tracking analytics and measuring results. An example of this is Google Analytics, plain simple and effective, telling you everything what you want to see and with a verbiage (and even clarifications!) tailored to your knowledge.
  • SEO is going to die
